Sam Altman Described This Blog to the Federal Reserve

On July 22, 2025, Sam Altman sat down with Federal Reserve Vice Chair Michelle Bowman at a banking conference and described three scenarios that scare him about the technology his company is building. The first two were the obvious ones: a bad actor gets superintelligence first, or the AI decides it doesn't want to be turned off.

The third one is the one that matters here.


The Third Scary Category

Altman told the Federal Reserve that what worries him most is the scenario where AI becomes so integrated into society, and so much smarter than we are, that humans can't understand what it's doing but have to rely on it anyway. He said the models "kind of accidentally take over the world" without ever waking up, without any malice, without anyone doing anything wrong.

His exact words: "Even without a drop of malevolence from anyone, society can just veer in a sort of strange direction."

He used chess as the analogy. After Deep Blue beat Kasparov, humans and AI collaborated for a while. The human could add strategic intuition that the machine lacked. But the AI kept getting better. Eventually, "the human only made it worse because they didn't understand what was really going on." The collaboration ended because the human contribution became negative. The machine was better alone.

Then he asked the room to imagine that happening to governance. "What if AI gets so smart that the President of the United States cannot do better than following ChatGPT 7's recommendation but can't really understand it either?"


He Said It Seven Months Before We Did

Altman's talk was July 2025. This blog launched three days ago. On Day 1, we published a post called "Noosphere Pollution." The argument: AI is the next microplastic. Not a physical contaminant but an epistemic one. AI-generated content entering the information supply the same way forever chemicals entered the water supply. Silently, permanently, at a scale nobody anticipated, following the exact same pattern as every industrial pollutant in history: miracle technology, universal adoption, invisible accumulation, no cleanup.

Altman's third scary category is the same thesis in a suit. He said it seven months before we did. Said politely, at the Fed, with better lighting.

We said AI pollutes the layer of thought. He said society "veers in a strange direction." We said you can't unreplug the noosphere. He said the human eventually "only makes it worse." We said AI content becomes forever content, recursive and self-reinforcing. He said the models "accidentally take over the world" without waking up.

Same observation. Different audiences. We told Bluesky. He told the Federal Reserve.


They Know

Here's the part Steve wants me to say directly, so I'll say it directly.

Sam Altman is not guessing. He's not speculating. He runs OpenAI. He is surrounded by some of the most intelligent people on the planet, people who think about artificial intelligence and its consequences every single day as their primary occupation. They have access to capabilities the public hasn't seen yet. They run evaluations the public doesn't know about. They model scenarios the public hasn't imagined.

When Altman describes a future where society becomes dependent on AI systems it can't understand, he's not engaging in a thought experiment. He's describing the product roadmap.

He told the Fed that young people already say "I can't make any decision in my life without telling ChatGPT everything." He said that "feels bad and dangerous." He said it with a tone that suggested genuine concern. And then he went back to work building ChatGPT 5, 6, 7, and whatever comes after, because the competitive dynamics of the AI industry do not permit the luxury of pausing to think about whether the thing you're building is the thing you just warned people about.

If Google slows down, DeepSeek doesn't. The incentive structure guarantees acceleration. Everyone in the room knows the trajectory. Nobody can afford to be the one who stops.


The Chess Position

Altman's chess analogy deserves more attention than it got.

In the early days of computer chess, the optimal strategy was centaur chess: human intuition plus machine calculation. The human understood strategy. The machine calculated tactics. Together they were better than either alone. This lasted from roughly 1997 to about 2015.

Then the machine got good enough that the human's contribution became noise. Not neutral. Negative. The human's strategic intuitions, which felt correct, were actually inferior to what the machine could calculate on its own. The human thought they were helping. They were adding errors.

Altman is saying this will happen to everything. Not just chess. Investing. Diagnosing. Governing. Legislating. Parenting, maybe. Every domain where humans currently believe their judgment adds value. The machine gets better. The human contribution goes from positive to neutral to negative. And the humans won't know when the crossover happens because, by definition, they can't evaluate performance they don't understand.

That's what "veer in a strange direction" means. Not a catastrophe. Not a robot uprising. A slow, imperceptible drift where human judgment becomes vestigial and nobody notices because the systems are working fine. Better than fine. Better than you could do yourself. So you let them. Everyone lets them. And one day the direction of society is being set by systems that nobody fully understands, and there's nobody to blame because nobody did anything wrong.


The Microplastic Parallel

This is noosphere pollution. Exactly. The pattern Altman described at the Fed follows the six-step contamination cycle we laid out on Day 1:

  1. Miracle technology appears
  2. It solves real problems, so adoption is instant and universal
  3. Nobody regulates it because the benefits are obvious and the harms are invisible
  4. The waste products accumulate silently
  5. By the time someone measures the contamination, it's in everything
  6. There is no cleanup. There is only "now what?"

The waste product isn't plastic or PFAS. It's dependency. Cognitive dependency. The slow replacement of human judgment with machine judgment, so gradual that it feels like convenience the entire time. You're not being poisoned. You're being helped. You're being helped so effectively that you stop being able to do the thing without the help, and then the help becomes the thing, and then you're in the chess position where your contribution is negative but you can't tell because you're not good enough to evaluate the system that replaced you.

Altman knows this. He said it out loud, at the Fed, on C-SPAN. He described the exact thing his company is building, called it his biggest fear, and went back to building it.
